Cooking meals at home with the family has so many benefits including healthier meals, family time and affordability. Sometimes, however, if a recipe involves too many labour-intensive steps such as finely chopping vegetables, garlic, herbs, or grating lemon zest, you might opt for frozen or microwave meals to save time. Fortunately, Microplane offers a range of graters and slicers that make meal preparation so easy. I and several fellow food bloggers were invited to watch Chef Eyal Liebman of Chef & Somm demonstrate some of Microplane graters and slicers at The VandenBerg House in Leslieville.
The first Microplane product Chef Liebman demonstrated was Microplane’s food slicer. The food slicer is so versatile since it can slice strawberries, grapes, kiwis, bananas, eggs and more. Chef Liebman used the food slicer to slice strawberries and we noticed how even the slices were. This slicer would be great for making fruit salads in the summer.
Next to be demonstrated was Microplane’s Garlic Slicer. Chef Liebman showed us how easy it is to use. Just remove the top half of the Garlic Slicer, pop a clove of garlic in the bottom half of the slicer, place the top half of the slicer on the bottom and move the top half of the slicer back and forth until the garlic is completely sliced. I tried using the garlic slicer at home and was impressed with how easy it was and how thin the garlic slices were. These garlic slices would be great to add to pasta sauces, stir fries or as a pizza topping.
One of my favourite items was the Flexi Zesti Lemon Zester from Microplane, which is another product that is so easy to use. Just rub the lemon against the grated side of the Flexi Zesti. When you’re finished grating the lemon skin, just remove the top half off of the zester and all of the lemon zest will be collected in the bottom half. The Flexi Zesti comes in three vibrant colours: green, yellow and orange. Lemon zest adds such piquant flavour to dishes and it’s now so easy to do so with the Flexi Zesti.
The 3-in-1 Ginger Tool will encourage you to add sliced or minced ginger to your dishes. Use the larger blade to remove the peel of the ginger and slice the ginger while the fine grater is used to create minced ginger.
Chef Liebman had prepared several dishes using Microplane slicers and graters and now invited us into the dining room to give them a try.
This savoury terrine was made from beef and pork.
The Arugula Salad featured slices of fennel, which gave the salad a surprising sweetness. I have never used fennel before, but am eager to try the 3-in-1 ginger tool to add fennel slices to my salads.
These delicious morcels of salmon featured garlic slices to give the dish a bit of kick.
These lovely desserts featured finely grated toppings.
Each of use received the following Microplane slicers and graters to use at home.
I’m very impressed with Microplane graters and slicers and will use them to make meal preparation much easier. They will also allow me to be more innovative in the kitchen. You can purchase Microplane products online.
