Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12, 2019 so you have a few weeks to organize an outing or buy your mom something special. This is the one day of the year when we can show our moms the appreciation that we may not show all year. I usually take my mother out for lunch on Mother’s Day. In fact, there are many restaurants in Toronto that are offering Mother’s Day Brunch in 2019. If you prefer to have a more low key celebration – perhaps lunch at home (that you prepare!) and a special gift – I have gathered a few of my favourite Mother’s Day gift ideas for you below.
Mermaid Glass bead bracelets from Toronto designer Nogu are a fun gift for a youthful mom. The iridescent beads on these Mermaid bracelets reflect light so they appear to glow both in daylight and in the dark. These hand-crafted bracelets include a .925 Sterling Silver centrepiece and a .925 Sterling Silver logo charm. You can buy a single bracelet in your mom’s favourite colour or several of them. My favourite combination is grey, pink and white. Bracelets are one size fits all as they have an elastic cord. Nogu has partnered with Take 3 and is donating 5% of sales from the Mermaid Glass Collection to help support their mission to clean up the oceans and reduce plastic pollution. Bracelets range from $54-$74 and can be purchased online. If you join their mailing list, you will receive 25% of your first order.
You’ll be popular with Mom if you give her a Mother’s Day Tote, $39.50, in any of these colours from Chapters Indigo. These vegan leather totes come in super trendy, blush pink, aqua, a multi-floral and black. The unlined interior has with one pocket and the long handles allow it to be carried or thrown over the shoulder. The tote secures with an interior gold-finish snap closure. These totes are 19.5” x 13.5”, are made from 100% polyurethane with a saffiano finish. Purchase in store or online at Indigo.

Becoming by Michelle Obama
Does your Mom love to read? Then I highly recommend getting her Michelle Obama’s Becoming for Mother’s Day as it’s one of the best autobiographies I’ve read. Many of us know the First Lady as a classy, intelligent partner of the 44th president of the U.S. This memoir, however, reveals an incredibly determined and focused woman who, with the encouragement of her family, pursued excellence from elementary school to the revered halls of Princeton and Harvard and later at an elite Chicago law firm. Even more interesting is the fact that she gave up her prestigious law career and took a huge salary cut to pursue community work that felt more in line with her values. Ms. Obama writes with endearing honesty and warmth in the course of sharing her memories of childhood, university years and marriage to Barack Obama. For instance, she reveals that her high school guidance counselor told her that she was “not Princeton material”. She describes the challenges of living in the White House, where windows had to be secured at all times for security reasons and shares her feelings about the backlash to a comment she made in a speech while campaigning for her husband. Michelle Obama is a stellar role model for women and I highly recommend her autobiography. You can purchase Becoming by Michelle Obama on Amazon or at Chapters Indigo.
